History

MORNING STAR BAPTIST CHURCH was founded in 1907 by Reverend R.L. Bailey, and seven dedicated Christians in an old house in Foggy Bottom, Georgetown. The little congregation, originally named “Baker’s Hill Mission”, now officially named the Morning Star Baptist Church, constructed and paid for their first building on C Street in NW Washington.  Reverend Bailey served Morning Star until he was called from labor to reward in 1915.

Reverend Bailey was succeeded by Reverend F.C. Bundy, a son of the church.  He served as Pastor from 1916 until 1935.  Pastor Bundy was a great organizer and under his leadership, the membership grew and Morning Star acquired a new church building on Twenty-Sixth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. The church expanded all of its ministries and became a recognized and respected church in the Georgetown community.
  • Reverend L.C. Murray was called to be the permanent pastor in 1936 and moved Morning Star to T Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
  • In 1971, Pastor Murray retired and Reverend Gerald L. Martin was installed on December 12, 1971 as Morning Star’s fourth pastor.  Under the leadership of Pastor Martin, Morning Star grew to include several ministries.
  • Morning Star sold the old church building on T Street, N.W. and purchased a new church facility at 3204 Brothers Place, S.E., Washington, D.C. in December 2004.
  • Pastor Martin’s vision for Morning Star was to reach and win our community for Christ by witnessing to and helping people who are hurting, searching and looking for a better way of life.  Pastor Martin retired December 31, 2013.
  • Pastor Michael Sharp was installed on January 19, 2014 as Morning Star’s fifth Pastor and continues the tradition of building ministries and supporting the mission of inspiring a love for Christ and a passion for righteousness.
Under the mighty hand of God, Morning Star has moved into the new millennium with its focus on its vision and a resolve to live up to its mission, “Reaching and Winning the Community for Christ”.  Morning Star’s prayer is that the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Love continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all the members of Morning Star.
